Sustainable Cities and Human Settlements Awards was unveiled during the Habitat III

The United Nations Conference on Housing and Urban Sustainable Development (Habitat III) was grandly held in the city of Quito, Ecuador, from 17 to 20 October 2016. On the evening of October 18, 2016, the Sustainable Cities and Human Settlements Award-presenting Ceremony (SCAHSA Award) was unveiled at the BEST WESTERN Hotel in Quito. After nearly a year of layers of selection and intense competition, the current "SCAHSA Award" has given birth to a total of 25 awards in the six major categories.

In the presence of more than 400 guests from all over the world, the organizers played the short videos of the award winners in each category to explain the reasons for their awards and share their achievements and successful experiences in sustainable city and human settlements. Subsequently, Senior UN officials and international dignitaries presented the winners with the Green Crystal Trophy and congratulated them.


Winners of the Global Human Settlements Award on Planning and Design


Of the 25 " SCAHSA Award" this year, Vienna, Austria, Cuenca, Ecuador, City of Oakland, U.S.A and County of Chun'an, Zhejiang, China won the honorary title of "Global Green City"; Town of Qingxi,Guangdong,China won the honorary title of "Global Green Town", Ecuador Galapagos National Park and the Hunter Mountain,New York, USA was awarded the "Global Low-Carbon Ecological Scenic Spot"; Haikou Mission Hills International Resort won the title of "Global Model of Ecological Restoration and Protection"; Mission Hills Forest City (Malaysia); Cerro Verde Ecolodge and Research Center (Ecuador), Urban Prosperity Strategy for Zapopan, México 2030, and the Meixi Lake International New City, Changsha and Zijun Mount?Foothill City, all won the “Global Human Settlements Award on Planning and Design”; Taziry Ecolodge & Sustainable Village, Siwa Oasis, Egypt, Mahindra Splendour (India) and LA?CITY, Holiday belle ville, KING’S VILLA, ZhongHe New Town City and Red Star Manor from China won the honorary title of "Global Human Settlements Model of Residential Area"; Dato' Maimunah Mohd Sharif, Mayor, Seberang Perai, Malaysia, Prof. Qi Lu, Professor, Peking University, Li Zhenhan, President, Shandong Geological Minerals New Energy Co., Ltd. and Wang Manli, Chairman, Asia-Pacific Famous Female Federation were awarded the "Global Human Settlements Outstanding Contribution Award"; and Roof Garden and Rooftop Farming Technology, Schaduf, Egypt was granted the "Global Human Settlements Model of Green Technology" for its innovation in green technology.

SCAHSA, which pronounces as SaSa, means the flying wind in the Chinese language, implying that the wind of the green flying over the world. It is also easy to read out in Chinese! On the award-presenting scene, the host repeatedly led the guests to shout " SCAHSA!" in a passionate voice and the sound resounded through the hall, which was very appealing! The awarding ceremony came to an end in a warm atmosphere. The deeds of the winners draw the wide attention of both the industry and the international community. It’s our hope that this green wind will blow the whole world and contribute to the sustainable development.

The presenters at the awarding ceremony include Ambassador Anwarul K. Chowdhury, Senior Representative of the United Nations Human Settlements Program and the United Nations Environment Program, Mr. Nicholas You, Honorary Chair, World Urban Campaign, Philbert Johnson, Permanent Mission of Ghana To United Nations and so on.

The "Sustainable City and Human Settlements Award" (the shorted form SCAHSA in English and SaSa in Chinese ), formerly known as the "Global Human Settlements Awards", is created and presented by the Global Forum on Human Settlements (GFHS) and is a world-level award to be presented annually, which is aimed to promote the missions of the GFHS, bolster the implementation of the United Nations Habitat Agenda and the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda (particularly Goal 11), inspire winners to work harder and summarize and promote their outstanding progress and valuable experience in moving towards more sustainable goals. With the support and guidance of the United Nations Environment Program and other institutions, this Award has been successfully held for the eleven sessions, and are presented to the winners from all over the world, which also provides a higher-level interactive platform for international peers to share best practices and experience, and generates a significant demonstration effect. " SCAHSA Award" sets up a total of the seven major categories: cities (districts, towns), scenic spots, construction, planning and design, transportation and green technology. All individuals, including children are allowed to apply to GFHS Secretariat all year round.


The awarders and awardees


As an important parallel conference of "Habitat III", the 11th Global Forum on Human Settlements was successfully held in Quito on October 18th. This Forum is jointly organized by the Global Forum on Human Settlements (GFHS), the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat), the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), the World Urban Campaign (WUC) and Universal Peace Federation (UPF) with the related organizations of Ecuador.

The Conference made an in-depth discussion on the topic "Compact Sustainable City Offers a Better Life" and issued the outcome document for the IGMC Standard 3.0, which also provides technical means and assessment methods for the specific implementation of Sustainable Development Agenda 2030 and the New Urban Agenda at a municipal level. The Conference was attended by more than 400 representatives, including the leaders from Ecuador and relevant countries, senior officials of the United Nations, the mayors of multinational cities, diplomatic envoys, leading enterprise leaders, experts and scholars, heads of international organizations and the representatives of women and children.

Global Forum on Human Settlements (GFHS) is a non-profit international organization with special consultative status of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), of which the mission is committed to "Sustainable Urban and Human Settlements for All" and building a dialogue platform of the World Sustainable Urbanization. For this purpose, GFHS has successfully conducted the cooperation in various areas with the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the United Nations Environment Program, the United Nations Human Settlements Program and so on. To this day, the annual conference of Global Forum on Human Settlements has been successfully held for the 11 sessions in China, the United States, Brazil, Germany, Colombia and Ecuador, and has been attended by more than 12,000 delegates from all walks of life, which provides a higher-level of dialogue platform for governments, non-governmental organizations, business circles, academia and so on, and contributes a lot to the implementation of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, the Habitat Agenda, the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and the New Urban Agenda.
