The ChangshanGushan Community project total area of 53.3 hectares, Locates in the central area of Xiangjiang National New Town, Changsha, Hunan province.

Went through the past 20 years of the rapid modernization and urbanization, Changshahas achieved remarkable growth and social progress, while theurban expansionfaces significant challenges such as similarity in design, destruction of primary ecosystems and conflicts between different social groups, and so forth. There needs to find out a creative way of comprehensive urban planning in order to achieve the goals of recovering natural environment, reviving local culture, reshaping the modern community and so on.

With the vision of “celebrate nature and culture, create high-quality community”, following through the principles of sustainable designand according to the unique natural and cultural character of the site, Xiangjiang new town management committee, Vanke Group and Designers worked together to developan overall plan for a community with “picturesque mountain and river, variety ofprograms, humanistic care, local cultural heritage and sustainable design”.

Based on existing conditions, Vanke design group analyzed potential problems of urban traffic and natural environment, clarified overall planning strategy of the site and surrounding area and then put forward creative solutions of preserving nature ecology, providing public accessibility, encouraging cultural exchanges, optimizing public facilities and introducing public art, so as to create a livable, friendly and intelligent international community.

Main characters of Gushan community design included as below,
Picturesquemountain and river
Utilizing adjacent the Gushan Natural Park, and the site set within fields, forest, mountains, lakes and streams. The design of Gushan community respects natural texture and landscape structure, using Environment Oriented Design (EOD) strategies aim to keep the natural character of the site.
·A comprehensive ecological infrastructure of the site has been made in the first place, applying Low Impact Design (LID) strategieswith the aim of reducing the risk ofurban water-logging.
·Remain the Mountains and lakes inside of the site as open space. A main view corridor such as views to the mountains and Yueange Park has been maintained.
·Grading and planting design helped reduce noise, vibrations and bad visual experience caused by transportation-oriented Changwang road cutting through the site.
·By introducing green and blue corridors into the site, urban and nature blended together, this created a community with poetic landscape.
Symbiosis in programs
In order to satisfy the requirement of being identifiable and flexible in the future, the community was designed with a clear structure of “one center, one axis, two corridors and three zones”.Besides, the community would have positive interactions with surrounding area by reinforcing the transportation connections with second ring road and rail transits.
·Community central park was built based on preserved natural mountain and lake, together with supporting retails, medical and cultural facilities creating a community center.
·Gotang road has been redesigned as a boulevard that connecting city and community.
·Variety of residential developed according to different locations related with the whole environment.
Humanistic care
Following with child friendly community design philosophy, the design of Gushan community used children as a link to connect residence. In the design of transportation, way-finding system and public facilities, children’s physical and mental health was the first priority to consider, so that they could enjoy the open space in community safely, lively and easily.

Community park way designed to encourage healthy and environmental friendly way of travel, satisfy the daily requirement of biking, hiking, jogging, dog walking and so forth , create opportunities for residence to socialize with each other.

International school, lifestyle experience center, gym and health care centerin the community would help residence from different generation, different race or religion anddifferent social classesshare equal educational and medical service, achieving a harmonious community with respect, equality, interaction andcollaboration.
Art drive
Art oriented urban design philosophy would apply in the design of community, including the design of urban open space, such as streets, plaza, parks and so forth. By creating characteristic architecture, landscape and furniture catalog, the design of Gushaninternationalcommunity aimed to inherit local material, color andtechnique, revitalize local cultural heritage and artistic elements and create cultural interactive places with stories and emotions.

Traditional Chinese festival and art event like Mid-autumn lantern festival and spring festival parade could take place in the open space inside central park, which would enhanceesthetic quality and increase happiness level of residence in the community.
Sustainable design
The project design follows“Green Community” design standard. Buildings in community designed as high-profile green building. In order to gain the goal of energy conservation, emission reduction, low carbon and environmental protection, most of the buildings in community oriented to south, optimized the natural light and air conditions and utilized Green energy.

At the same time, Gushan community would become a demonstration of “Sponge Community” with surface runoff control, rain gardens, bio swales, penetrating pavers, green roofs and so on in response to national policy of “Sponge Cities”

“Big data” and intelligent safety-monitoring system would be used in operating and managing the community, which helped clarify the needs of residence, reduce operational cost and improve quality of community service.
Changsha, a national historical and cultural City is now becoming an international metropolis. Gushaninternationalcommunity, as one of the best international cultural communities in Xiangjiang new town, in the same time, plays a leading, demonstrating and promoting role inconstructing a sustainable community by respecting natural environment, reviving local culture, reshaping the modern community and introducing new life style.
